Ebay is also a good source for those movies, many sellers being more reasonably priced than others and they are authentic and usually restored as well. I have also purchased DVD'S from LovingtheClassics.com and they are reputable as well. They do, however, specialize in the older films and many silents which I cannot find anywhere else. Most are only $14.95 and shipping reasonable.
As far as quality and some so called restored versions though, I first purchased Farewell to Arms in its original state and yes, some of it could use some help, however, the restored version I just bought on Amazon was soooooooooo disappointing because it was censored, with all the best parts edited or completely deleted, specifically the night lovemaking scenes and the issue of her being pregneant out of wedlock. It ruined the whole movie for me so I will stick to the original even if the film quality is not as good. I do not think any company should be allowed to change or edit these films. Does anyone else share my opinion?

Forgot to say one more thing. A warning to all surfing the net to find other sources for GC'S movies: Buyer Beware of cinemamoon.com. I thought I was getting a deal for The Hanging Tree but not only did I have to wait forever to finally receive it, when received, it was not playable at all (as advertised for american dvd players). This may have been due to the awful shipping method.....just a thin envelope.....no case or anything. No matter, please don't waste your time and money on this site because you will not get a response to emails or a refund.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience with this site. I had never heard of it but when I looked at it I found a) no imprint (so you have absolutely no idea who you are dealing with, just a general contact form) and b) barely any information at all in their sections. I don't have The Hanging Tree on DVD but maybe someone here may be able to help you.

Does anyone else share my opinion? I couldn't agree more. It's the target audience you know and all those specific groups, I won't name them but you all know who they are anyway (who think that by displaying publicly what they feel should never have been exposed in the first place might ruin their children). They don't realize that children these days have a lot of ways of getting up-to-date, they ignore the fact that sexuality and the human body is part of our lives and nothing to be ashamed of. They think that displaying a naked man in a cartoon is a shame. Oh, how terrible..really ridiculous. Back in the early days people weren't bothered so much with scenes of erotic nature. I personally have never had a problem with night lovemaking scenes, after all it's something wonderful, isn't it? So why not show it. If you never look, you can't learn.

The version of A Farewell to Arms that has those two scenes edited out is the version that was released in theaters in 1932. It just depends on which dvd you buy as to which version you get; the theatrical release or the complete version.

Thanks, I did not know the sanitized version was the one released in 1932. I can tell I am going to learn alot from you and others here, being kind of a newborn where GC is concerned. Well, I am sure glad they also did the complete version, because it's far far better. Do you know if the complete version has ever been restored, and if so, when? Thanks.

TCM runs the complete version when they air that one and it's available on dvd. Just look for a version with a running time around 89 minutes.

Criterion is releasing a stand alone dvd of Design for Living (1933)on Dec 6, 2011. It had previously been released as part of a box set. It will be available in standard dvd and bluray format. This is Gary's second bluray release with Vera Cruz being his first. www.criterion.com/films/27872-design-for-livingSpeaking of the bluray Vera Cruz, I finally got it last weekend and it really looked good. Very sharp and clear image and boy did Gary's blue eyes look even more beautiful!

Has anyone purchased the Farewell To Arms blu-ray? I just saw on Amazon that it has a run time of 80 minutes. So, then, it's the edited version.
