High Noon - 1952

This film costarred Katy Jurado, Lloyd Bridges, and Grace Kelly.

There is far too much to say about this film and I could get carpal tunnel syndrome if I typed it all . Gary won his second Best Actor Oscar for this film and it's one of my favorite movies (not just of Gary's but of all movies).

This is the version of the film everyone should have. It has been restored and it looks beautiful. In some older versions the brightness and contrast weren't adjusted correctly but this one looks perfect. It's a two disc set that has some wonderful bonus features including a 50 minute documentary about the film made by film historian and Gary Cooper expert John Mulholland, who I am proud to claim as a friend.

It kicks a whole lot of movies' asses; pretty much all westerns.

This picture makes my heart expand.



And this is quite possibly my favorite shot in the entire movie. That face. It makes me think about a review I read on some DVD site; about how even though his age had visibly caught up with him in this movie there was still something mysteriously beautiful about him.

Will Kane is my fave of his characters and definitely the one I'm the most attracted to.

Since 1915, when the studio was first opened for business, an endless string of hard riding shoot-em-ups have been produced at this location. Monogram Studios made 750 "B" westerns before selling the ranch to singing cowboy Gene Autry in 1952. Legendary cowboy actors, including William S. Hart, Gary Cooper, Tom Mix, Roy Rogers, Bill Boyd, and John Wayne filmed their westerns here until 1962 when a fire swept through Placerita Canyon destroying the main western street. Gene Autry maintained the rest of the ranch for his horse Champion until the horses death in 1990. He then put the ranch up for sale and the Veluzat brothers purchased it. Melody Ranch has been brought back to life with the restoration of the famous western street. You can experience a page torn from history on the street where famous westerns were made such as, The Lone Ranger, Wyatt Earp, Gunsmoke, Hopalong Cassidy, Annie Oakly, Rin Tin Tin and the Cisco Kid. Yes many things have changed but the old west hasn’t…..at least not at Melody Ranch.
