Here we go - the first of many contests!! ;D Since it's the holiday season and people are busy, this one is going to be very easy. Just reply to this post and tell me your favorite thing about Gary. I love his calm, assured demeanor and the comforted feeling I have when watching his movies. The contest will be open from 12/8 to 12/15 and then I will randomly pick a name from everyone who replied and they will win this snazzy mug I had custom made. Sadly Miss Piggy is not included but you can also choose three of the following movies that are not available on commercial dvd (at least not in Region 1). The Last Outlaw - 1927 (Silent) Poor Wings - 1927 (Silent) Very Good Nevada - 1927 (Silent) Poor Doomsday - 1928 (Silent - with a new score put together by me as the music on the dvd was terrible) Good Lilac Time - 1928 (Silent) Good The Virginian – 1929 Very Good Seven Days Leave – 1930 Poor Only the Brave – 1930 Poor A Man From Wyoming – 1930 Poor City Streets – 1931 Good His Woman – 1931 Poor If I Had A Million – 1932 Excellent Desire – 1936 Excellent Souls at Sea – 1937 Excellent Northwest Mounted Police – 1940 Excellent The Story of Dr. Wassell – 1944 Excellent Good Sam – 1948 Very Good Blowing Wild – 1953 Very Good Ten North Frederick – 1958 Excellent The Hanging Tree – 1959 Very Good The Naked Edge – 1961 Excellent All films are watchable but the poor ones are some of the oldest of his films and have not been broadcast in possibly a decade or more so the copies available have been watched and copied multiple times thus degrading the image.

I read once that a sculpter said that Gary Cooper had the perfect male head and face. Yes he did. I think he had a fabulous twinkle and I loved it when he rolled his eyes. He knew he had gifts, physical and talent, but he never took himself too seriously. People loved him and you just knew by his choice of good friends that he was a wonderful human being. I would love to have known him. He was my parents' favorite. My father met him in Montana on several occasions and always said that he was just what you would have imagined him to be. He had a sweet shyness about him. What a guy!!!!!!! My parents were Montanans too.

Welcome peeweec! That's so cool that your parents met Gary and that they are from Montana. Are you from there too? I am definitely gonna get up there one of these days. I've never read anywhere about someone meeting him and being disappointed which is really neat. I was fortunate to meet his daughter and she was just like I can imagine he would be; genuinely nice and down to earth.

Oooh! Miss Piggy is a cutie! Looking great in the lilac dress... Well, one thing that really stands out for me is his natural elegance. I simply love admiring his posture, his gestures, his way of speaking. Everything so refined, so polished. He was able to perfectly add that elegance to every character he played on the screen. And I think this is one of his characteristics that attracts me the most.

Eep! I must enter this one! The mug is undoubtedly beautiful, but it's the movies I want. Muahaha. Ahaha. Let's see, what do I like best about Gary? Do I have to just pick one thing? This is hard. I don't want to talk about his insanely beautiful, heartstoppingly amazing, mindblowingly beautiful, gloriously handsome looks. Because those are kind of obvious. So I'll just go with what's the second easiest to talk about and compliment his acting, since I do some acting myself ;D so I tend to notice that more than anything (besides possibly those insanely beautiful, heartstoppingly amazing, mindblowingly beautiful, gloriously handsome looks ) I love his natural performances. Even from the beginning, in silent movies, where everyone overacted, he effortlessly slipped into his roles like they were all made for him. He never had to change his style to fit with the times, because it always worked. He makes acting look so easy. Something I'm rather jealous of, actually. -.- Sooo. That's my entry. Can I enter multiple times? ME WANT RARE MOVIES.

I forgot to list Gary's last film, The Naked Edge, as one the winner can choose from so I added it to the list.

What I like about my DREAM-MAN Gary : I love his blue eyes, his lips, his smile, his hair, his height, his body shape. He's one of the very very few smartest and most handsome men ever. He has one of the rarely most beautiful facial features ever. I especially love him in elegant suits, white shirts and tie, because he looks like the perfect model in that classic style. So far his outer appearance and it's effect on me poor lady adoring him that much. Gary has something of a man and a boy at the same time. Gary has something mature and innocent at the same time. Gary protects and needs to be protected at the same time. Gary is strong and vulnerable at the same time. Gary can present many different feelings at the same time; that's why I especially love his silent movies where he expresses alone with his face more than the most skilled speaker. In his roles he showed his feelings as if they had been genuine. Gary won my heart, because I think he could really really love a woman like he showed in his many roles (now... is that thought way too naive of me? ).. one thing's sure: he makes a lady dream. ---------- Did I understand correct: We can win this lovely Garry-mug and the contest winner can choose three of the films you listed above? I would so much like to win Doomsday, His Woman, Man from Wyoming. - I am from Germany... and Europe has Region 2, but my DVD player also works also Region 1. PS: I love your sweet little Miss Piggy. ... and many thanks for the contest idea. Love it. Ena

Yes, the prize includes the mug and any three of those films. They'll be on region free dvd-r's so they should be playable in any country. So far I have sent films to friends in Russia and England and they have played fine. I've been a Miss Piggy fan since I was 2 years old. I have another Piggy doll just like that one except this I've had since I was 2 (she's 30 years old now ) and I saw this one on ebay a few years ago and had to pick her up too. Here's the original one being used as a model for my 1930s hat . I'm going to have more contests that will involve more skill coming up and the harder the contest, the better the prize ;D. I love all the stuff you said about Gary; you described him just perfectly. He definitely makes a girl dream; I dream about him at least once a week. ;D

The things I love about Gary Cooper can only be described best by people who knew him, on my behalf. "Gary was a man for whom the word handsome seemed an outrageous understatement" "Coop, you know, was painfully shy to the day he died. He'd drive his eyes to the ground and once in a while look up to see if he was making eye contact. It was no act" " He had no guile in him, no pettiness. He was big, big" "He had a marvelous combination of great strength and great gentility -- tough as steel, soft as fog" "The qualities that made Cooper a great star had little to do with acting." "Gary Cooper is not only romantic and dramatic, but he's uniquely funny as well. With unbelievable character and boyish charm" " He had an absolute set of principles he lived by he had a quality of inner torment and a great theatrical face great strength and great gentility" "I remember he put his hand on my head and gentle tossled my hair when we said goodbye. I remember looking into his eyes, even today. He had a charisma about him that was incredibly warm and friendly, like he was your best friend you hadn't seen for a while" "Some people are just nice guys and nothing, not even Hollywood, can change it." " Gary Cooper remains a constant presence as far as it goes for films and the old Hollywood era. His words were simple, really, though they meant so much. "Coop is a fine man; as honest and straight and friendly and unspoiled as he looks. If you made up a character like Coop, nobody would believe it. He’s just too good to be true.” Ernest Hemingway on Gary Cooper. I rest my case !!

I put everyone’s name in a hat (literally the hat I wore to work today ) and the lucky winner is… Marina. Send me your address in a PM and let me know which movies you would like and I’ll get them and the mug off to you. I’ve also updated the movie list to include quality descriptions so you can make a more informed decision. Thanks to everyone who entered and better luck next time to those who didn’t win. I think I’ll go ahead and do another contest in January to start the new year off right. This one will be a scavenger hunt type game where you’ll have to search for things on the site. This one will involve more time and skill and will have a bigger prize pack too.
