That's great news! The region 2 version looked very good so this is exciting. I've got it on my Christmas list!

The R2 was pretty good as well. I wouldn't say the R1 version looks as good as High Noon but it certainly looks very clean and sharp. The thing that bothered me on the R2 version was the PAL speed up, which was more noticable on Bluebeard's Eigth wife with the already extremely fast talking of this screwball comedy.
I would say that it looks about as good as the normal WB movie from the 30's, which are ussually better than Paramount's movies from back then for image quality.

I just saw that you posted this on the Home Theater Forum and I came to post it here and just now saw your post. I guess I must have missed it.

hello all, i was wondering if you know of a dvd release of the restored version of „a farewell to arms“ for region 2. according to the message board on IMDb, the best edition is the IMAGE edition which restores all the censored material and thus increases the running time from 79 (of the public domain edition) to 89 minutes. but it seems to be available for region 1 only. does anybody know if this new Brightspark edition (2009) might be the restored version: just www.amazon.co.uk/Farewell-Arms-DVD-Gary-Cooper/dp/B002B847O4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1261422524&sr=8-2-fkmr1greetings from austria and merry christmas! evelyn

Hi Evelyn, Merry Christmas to you too! It looks like that version of A Farewell to Arms is the complete version since it's listed as being 90 minutes. I don't know about the quality though.

It looks like the release of Devil and the Deep has been pushed back a couple of weeks to February 1st.

I have a question, if anyone might know....I was watching Big Love (HBO series) recently and the kids were watching TV and in the background. I could see a B&W movie playing which definitely looked like Alice in Wonderland from 1933. I have seen that movie, although it has been a long time, and I seem to remember a scene where Alice is holding what is supposed to be a baby but it turns into a pig. How is it possible that that movie would be in the background of this HBO series? Is there a Universal connection with HBO? I thought maybe someone might know.

From what I found on the internet, it looks like HBO is owned by Time Warner which is a subsidiary of Warner Brothers. Alice In Wonderland (1933) is owned by Universal so I don't think there is a link there. That's interesting though if it was that film in the background.

We are finally going to get a good dvd of Meet John Doe in Region 1 format!!! This sounds like the same version I have that was released in Europe a few years ago. My version is a dvd-r copy that a friend made and it is the best version I have seen so far. It'll be nice to have it on a real dvd though so I'm definitely all over this as it's my fave of his and the one that made me fall for him. www.classicflix.com/meet-john-70th-anniversary-ultimate-collectors-edition-p-568.html

Vera Cruz is now available on bluray and this is Gary's first high definition dvd release. I love the DVD Beaver site as Gary (the guys that runs it) does great reviews of dvd releases. Here is the link for Vera Cruz. www.dvdbeaver.com/film3/blu-ray_reviews54/vera_cruz_blu-ray.htmHere are the highlights of his review: Vera Cruz is duller than many would like on Blu-ray from MGM. What I suggest is that with a through cleaning this may have perked-up some of the Technicolor hues. It wouldn't say it gave me a poor presentation but I suspect if some work were put in it may have paid off dramatically in regards to the visuals. The grain not overly blocky and there is no damage. This is dual-layered and has a very high bitrate. It is less consistent occasionally showing some depth but in other scenes looks flat and video-like. I am led to believe it is more the source than the transfer. This is a great film but probably not one in line-up for restoration. The option, digitally, would have been some boosting but that might have backfired - every print has different characteristics regarding density. This Blu-ray may not be stellar by modern terms - but it is well in advance of SD (standard definition) and the film is an enjoyable western/adventure. Those with modest expectations on the video will appreciate the movie the most via 1080P. I think Vera Cruz is a pretty good film - especially if you are a fan of either or both of the leads. There is some real entertainment value here seeing Lancaster and Cooper interacting on screen. Ohhh - Yes, that's Charles Bronson! (listed as Charles Buchinsky) playing the character 'Pittsburgh' in the film. This Blu-ray is not pristine but the price is very appealing. Vintage film devotees will get the most out of Vera Cruz in hi-def. Gary Tooze May 30th, 2011 He also said that this is a region free release so it should play in any dvd player in any country.

Good news for those of you having a Blu-ray player, I don't happen to be one of them... but then again I don't even have the film on DVD.
