Hello everyone. I became a member just today because I have gone from hardly knowing anything about Gary Cooper at the beginning of this year to an ardent and avid fan. I am purchasing every movie I can get my hands on.
Does anyone know if Coop did indeed play the harmonica as seen in Meet John Doe with Walter Brennen?
BTW, I love this site and all the info on it about this beautiful man and great actor!!!!!!!

Welcome to the site! You sound just like me back in 2006. I knew very little about Gary and I saw Meet John Doe one day (after having seen Sergeant York as a child and Pride of the Yankees the year before) and after that I had to get everything Gary related I could find. ;D
Gary loved to play the harmonica as his daughter Maria has said and he is indeed playing it in Meet John Doe (my favorite of his films) and The Cowboy and the Lady.

I have not heard all that Maria said about her father, but I was sure I was right as no one could fake playing the harmonica so well. Thanks for confirming that. Yes, I am really hooked on this man and all of his movies now. I know some were better than others (I LUV, LUV, LUV The Cowboy and The Lady though) but no matter if the script was good or not, I don't think he really did a bad movie because he was such a great actor in all of them. I am just sad that some of his movies are degraded or lost forever to us. Thanks Coopsgirl for making this site possible as well as the GREAT videos on You Tube. Just wish I could see them ALL from my IPhone during the day, especially Begging You For Mercy, my FAVORITE!!!!

but no matter if the script was good or not, I don't think he really did a bad movie because he was such a great actor in all of them. You know, when you work on a project most of the time you are annoyed by some detail that, to others, does not even seem to exist..because you strive for perfection. You have certain expectations and if you can't fulfill them, you're unhappy. I'm sure Gary felt the same way.

Thanks marnanjesse for the compliments on my videos! The 'begging you for mercy' is one of my favorites too and it's one that has been viewed the most. That song was just so perfect for that film.

I wish someone would slap all those companies who put local restrictions on music videos on Youtube but I've seen quite a few of your videos, Coopsgirl and I loved them, especially the music choice.
I showed my mom Meet John Doe (in the awful German version, they're usually pretty good at dubbing films but this one never should have been released that way) one Christmas day and she asked me to turn it off after 30 minutes. She thought it was just boring, she loved Bluebeard's Wife but hated Meet John Doe. That said she doesn't really like Gary Cooper so her saying she loves one of his films was a major effort on my part but it was worth it.
