I know it's a little early since it's still the 6th but I'm out of town right now at a conference and I might not have time tomorrow to post some stuff so I'm doing it now. When I get back home in a couple of days I'll have to have a belated celebration and watch some of my fave Gary films.

Happy Birthday, Gary--about fifty years since you've been gone, but we haven't stopped celebrating your life and the way you've touched so many fans. God bless!
Tonight, I plan on watching The Naked Edge (a copy of which was kindly provided by Coopsgirl). I've never seen it and have been "saving" it for a Coop celebration.

I think you'll enjoy Naked Edge. I really like it and it was a different type of character for Gary.

I watched The Naked Edge and while at first I was a little apprehensive about some of the motifs that made the film (at least initially) feel like what would happen if Otto Preminger and Alfred Hitchcock got together, made a movie, and then decided to hyperbolize the "suspense" drama just for a good laugh (it reminded me of Anatomy of a Murder, The Wrong Man, and Suspicion at various points), after about 10 to 15 minutes, I was hooked! Gary had such range in his role--one moment he's tense, then romantic, then delighted and excited, then upset, then enraged...on and on it went! I can imagine how exhausted he must have been (and not just because he was ill); mentally, it must have been a taxing yet fulfilling role. Already, I want to watch the movie again, just to pay more attention to the little character nuances and details. Mostly, I loved seeing Gary in an "unusual," multi-dimensional role, and while it may not be as "classic" as some of his Oscar-worthy performances, this role as the "loving-husband-turned-potential-murderer" certainly helps prove that he was much more versatile than some of his critics would have you believe. And Deborah Kerr looked divine, as always. I'll have to do a more appropriate write-up for my blog when I have a chance. Thanks again for my copy, Coopsgirl. I hope your conference is going well! What other Coop films is everyone watching to celebrate his birthday? It's a little bittersweet this week, also knowing that soon enough will be the 50th anniversary of his death.

Believe it not but I'm just halfway through the film so far...for some reason I always get distracted...plus I'm busy preparing everything here at home since I expect visitors real soon. So, I guess my Gary movie marathon day will have to wait. Maybe I'll just finish the end of Naked Edge this Wednesday. ;D I think you'll enjoy Naked Edge. I really like it and it was a different type of character for Gary.

Wishing our beloved Gary Cooper a Happy Birthday. I was four when he died, but I swear I remember his death being mentioned by my parents.
May was a good month for birthdays: Gary on May 7th, 1901. Henry Fonda on May 16, 1905 (d. 1982 at 77) and Harry Carey, Jr. on May 16, 1920. James Stewart on May 20, 1908 (d. 1997 at 89) and John Wayne on May 26, 1907 (d. 1979 at 72). If not for the cancer Gary could have lived into the 1980s or 1990s ... unfortunately, having read the description of his illness and suffering, I knew only too well exactly what those words meant as my own father died of metastasized (sp) lung cancer at 77.
Also, in one of the episodes of The Waltons (someone mentioned the program in another post) from around 1977 or so - I need to look it up (!) the character of Jason Walton agonizes about being in the service and had registered as a conscientous objector (exactly as Alvin York had done). His commanding officer send him home to rethink this decision and Jason goes up to the mountains with his dog ... exactly straight out of Sergeant York ... FYI.
Always enjoy the posts and pictures ... Coopsgirl, if you could send me a personal email I have something I would like to send to you ...
My first memory of Gary was the school showing of The Real West. Usually Turner Classic has a few films in the lineup on his birthday, but not this year. I did record The Hanging Tree when TCM showed it about a month ago ...

I have a trip booked to New York from 23rd - 30th and on the 25th May during the trip I will be going down to Southampton to pay my respects to Gary & Rocky. Has anyone suggestions on what I can take on behalf of the members.

I would say, just let them know that the impact they have made over the years lingers on in our hearts and they're not forgotten. Just wish them the best. When you face a dead relative, it's usually easier to put your thoughts into words because you knew them better. I would say, as for you, why don't you express your feelings, how Gary for instance has changed your life and what you think was so special about him. What exactly are you looking for, thoughts, poems etc? Has anyone suggestions on what I can take on behalf of the members.

Yes, I'm the one who mentioned The Waltons. Love that show. BTW, the kids bring up Coop's name at the very end of the season 2 episode The Heritage. Check it out. youtu.be/p9vlamrxVBsAlso, in one of the episodes of The Waltons (someone mentioned the program in another post) from around 1977 or so - I need to look it up (!) the character of Jason Walton agonizes about being in the service and had registered as a conscientous objector (exactly as Alvin York had done).
